Veena is currently leading in a research project to assess the effects of the Minded Institute Yoga Therapy 8 week course (previously known as the Yoga for the Mind 8 week course) on depression and anxiety. She is working with Sat Bir S. Khalsa, Harvard Medical School, Leigh Gibson, Roehampton University and Heather Mason, founder of The Minded Institute (previously known as Yoga for the Mind). The results indicate that the 8 week course can bring about meaningful improvements in mental health, well-being, resilience and mindfulness. The research paper is due to be concluded and put forward for publication in 2013.
In December 2011 Veena worked with a team including Dr Luciano Bernardi, professor of internal medicine at the University of Pavia, Italy, to assess the effects of different breathing techniques and rates on baro-reflex sensitivity - a reflex mechanism that enables the body to maintain blood pressure at an appropriate rate. The research paper is available here. Dr Bernardi has published a large amount of research much of which explores breathing techniques and how modulating the breath can affect physiological measures.
